After a whirlwind sabbatical in Thailand and Australia spent competing in the world championships for Triathlon, little did Ben and Cat know that this experience was going to change their lives forever.

Where did it all start?

Ben and Cat started out as novice triathletes way back in 2005. Quickly bitten by the ‘tri bug’, they sought out the guidance of elite coaches from 2008 through to 2011. During this time, they raced and competed at the highest level, including several 70.3 World Championships and many podium finishes within their age group rankings, all while holding down their 9-5 jobs. But it was a chance meeting that would see them take a different path, and that’s where the ABCpure story really starts…

Cat tells us “From October 2011 we headed overseas for a 12-month sabbatical, which included time in Thailand and Australia. During this period, we invested a great deal of time to trial, test and learn a huge amount on how to train the body and mind for the world of multi-sport of triathlon. Then on the 3rd of June 2012, our first self-coached season, we qualified for the Ironman World Championships in Kona. On our first real attempt at the distance!”

After even more success in Kona, they knew they were onto something, and in December 2012 they hatched the beginnings of ABCpure.

As we returned from our time in Australia there was an assumption on both their parts that they would go back to what they knew. Cat worked in retail and Ben in engineering. Ben was on a 12-month sabbatical so he was expected back at his desk. A chance meeting of a friend and some encouragement and what they now know as life changing advice planted a seed. Did they really want to go back to the 9-5 they had left in 2011? Ben tells us “Without too much thinking, discussing or dithering we had some clients waiting in the wings for guidance. So there was no real time to think shall we, shan’t we? Instead we just asked ourselves what we needed to get started. A name, logo and some templates.” And so the business began.

Cat finds herself smiling as she tells me “If mystic meg looked into her crustal ball and said I would be with Ben, an Aussie, I would be running my own business and running that business with my partner, I would have said she was bonkers to even suggest that.” Six years on and spending time with this incredibly driven, positive and energetic Couplepreneur, it feels very infectious being around them and is clear that they are building a great Life brand together.

What are the benefits of being a couplepreneur?

When we speak with Cat, it is simple to see the overall job satisfaction and love that she has for not only her business but the life that she has designed too. She tells us that one of the large benefits to being a couplepreneur is that “you’re able to bounce ideas off each other easily, which usually ends up happening in a natural and fluid way”.

Often, meetings have to be scheduled to talk about particular areas but this isn’t the case at ABC Pure. Both Ben and Cat are able to take time to discuss anything and everything, essentially on the spot and that is a huge benefit that they experience to being in business with your partner.

Ben reinforces this as he tells us just how “Honest and open feelings can be shared, there is no holding back.”

Do your friends have couplepreneur envy?

We are seeing couplepreneur envy happen with lots of couples that initially have friends who think they are bonkers leaving good jobs to then jump off and start a business together. However, once they see the flexibility, fun, enjoyment and more that many couplepreneurs experience there can be a little envy that can set in.

Cat and Ben share just how much flexibility they have and the enormous job satisfaction they are experiencing and it fees like they are living a really positive life. Cat tells us “The business allows us to live a lifestyle whereby we are happy and have the most freedom to do what we please.” But getting a balance is key too. They tell us how they don’t always have their phone or laptop with them and arranging wonderful date nights is something Cat loves to do, as well as being able to set their own time limit on when they need to stop speaking about work.
At times this is still a work in progress.

What is the greatest learning you’ve experienced in running a business together?

As we piece together Cat and Ben’s journey, it is easy to see how they both have experienced learning curves from being in business together. Cat tells us “I’ve learnt that just because you have an idea of how something might work, that might not actually be the best way. Two heads together are better than one, we both bring something different.”

With Ben not having spent so much time in senior roles as Cat, the balance of two separate personalities is interesting. From the outside, you’re able to see that with Cat’s safe and calculated mind and Ben’s more relaxed and risk-taking attitude, this makes the perfect recipe for a couplepreneur. Cat leaves us with a bit of wisdom that she has learnt from her partnership with Ben in the business. She tells us “Sometimes, making calculated decisions can take time and on my own I could procrastinate over these. With Ben and both of us owning the business we have to take risks and together we are stronger to take these on and drive the business forward. And so far it’s working out really and feels very exciting particularly with what we both bring.”

And what does the future hold for ABCpure?

Cat tells us “We are very happy in the moment enjoying the here and now but we also have a vision of what life for Cat, Ben and ABCpure would look like in the future. For Ben it would definitely involve a 4-legged furry friend. Ben would love a dog.” Cat goes on to say “I will consider a dog but not whilst we are in a flat in London. We would both love to live somewhere more rural where you can just open your front door and run and cycle.

We are paying to live in London but not really taking advantage of what London offers from a cultural and entertainment perspective. The living space somewhere more rural may be modest but the potential of commercial space is what really excites us. Some posh sheds which could be used to offer our existing services and allow extra services to be added. These could include bike fitting or a space where athletes could get acclimated for certain race conditions / environments.

Adding an extra tier to our current suite of athletes also excites us. By this we mean a performance team, ABCpure performance sounds great! So, age group athletes performing at the top end of their age group would be part of this team and benefit from extra bells and whistles, what ever they might be. The escape to the country has to happen first, then the dog will be considered!”

We look forward to seeing where Ben and Cat’s journey takes them next.

What would you like to benefit from in joining Couplepreneurs??

Cat tell us “As a small business I am very keen to learn more about and understand the different routes and strategies other businesses have followed in order to add more zeros to their bank balance and execute growth plans.”

Ben adds “I would also be interested to learn how couples have managed to scale the business just as a couple before needing to bring additional resource in to the business.”
